Tri-City's 3rd period goal drowns Capitols

Middleton, WI – On a night honoring the 1980 Olympic Gold Medal Hockey Team, the Madison Capitols (6-18-2-2) miracle came up short as the fell 4-2 to the Tri City Storm (23-6-1-1). This was the only time these two teams would meet as Capitol Ice Arena this season.

Chaz Smedsrud wasted no time, putting the Caps ahead in the game only 26 seconds into the contest. A loose puck found it’s way onto the tape of Smedsrud who turned and fired a shot past Tri-City goaltender Jake Barczewski for his seventh of the season.

The Storm netted two straight less than five minutes apart, including a power play goal, to finish off the first period ahead 2-1.

The Caps would tie the game at two in the early in the second period.  Alex Mella stepped into a play to keep the puck alive on the left wing boards, where he sniped a goal to the top of the far side past Barczewski for his fourth of the year.

Tri-City’s Zac Jones gave the Storm the ultimate lead as he followed his own shot for a rebound attempt that fought past Joseph Lamoreaux for the 3-2 lead. Ronnie Attard would ice the game with his second of the contest with only 26 seconds remaining.

Lamoreaux continued his excellence, turning back 28 shots en route to the loss. Barczewski made 27 stops of his own while taking the victory.

Madison returns to action next Saturday when the team heads to Cedar Rapids to take on the RoughRiders. The Caps will return home on Thursday, January 17th when the Lincoln Stars come to town for the only time this season.
