MADISON, WI – The Madison Capitols fell to the Waterloo Black Hawks, 5-1, at Bob Suter’s Capitol Ice Arena on Friday night.
Madison (23-32-2-2) is ranked eighth in the Eastern Conference with 50 points. Waterloo (37-14-6-2) leads in the Western Conference with 82 points.
Center Jack Drury netted his 24th goal of the season at 7:01 of the first period to give Waterloo a 2-0 lead. Defenseman Mason Palmer carried the puck down the left wing and wristed a shot on goal. Lamoreaux made the pad save and the puck was directed to the left of the net. Drury picked up the loose puck, carried it around the net and out to the right of goaltender Joey Lamoreaux before wristing a shot into the top of the net.
Defenseman Ben Finkelstein started the scoring at 3:10 of the first period. Finkelstein carried the puck down the right wing of the Capitols zone before sniping a shot through traffic and beating Lamoreaux for his seventh goal of the season.
Left wing Ethan Johnson gave the Black Hawks a 3-0 lead at 3:22 of the second period. Finkelstein sprung Johnson down the right wing with a pass from between the benches. Johnson skated in on Lamoreaux and his initial shot was stopped. The left wing grabbed his own rebound and buried the puck for his sixth goal of the season.
Waterloo went up 4-0 with right wing Ben Copeland’s 18th goal of the season at 18:05 of the second period. Copeland carried the puck into the Capitols zone and put on the brakes in the left face-off circle. The right wing then wristed a shot past Lamoreaux to advance the Black Hawks score to four goals.
Forward Evan Dougherty ended the second period with his 11th goal of the season at 18:26. Forward Joey Cassetti passed the puck to Dougherty in the middle of the zone. Dougherty spun around, controlled the puck and scored to give Waterloo a 5-0 lead.
Goaltender Dryden McKay entered the game for the third period as the Capitols goaltender.
Center Anthony Callin put the Capitols on the scoreboard at 13:28 of the final frame. Callin carried the puck down the left wing, weaved through a couple of Black Hawks players and then jammed the puck past goaltender Jared Moe for his 13th goal of the season and a 5-1 score.
Lamoreaux (4-9-1-0) took his ninth of the season stopping 29-of-34 shots. McKay (19-23-1-2). Moe (23-6-1-0) earned his 23rd win of the season stopping 19-of-20 shots.
Madison went 0-for-2 on the power play. Waterloo was 0-for-1 with the man advantage.
Notables: Center Ludwig Stenlund’s five-game point streak ended…Center Cade Borchardt’s three-game point streak ended… Forward Kamil Sadlocha’s three-game point streak also ended.
