CEDAR RAPIDS, IA – Goaltender Joey Lamoreaux halted 35 shots to backstop the Madison Capitols to a 3-1 victory over the Cedar Rapids RoughRiders at Cedar Rapids Ice Arena on Saturday night.
Madison (6-5-0-0) is tied for fourth place in the Eastern Conference with 12 points. Cedar Rapids (5-6-0-0) is tied for seventh in the Eastern Conference with 10 points.
At 9:23 of the third period, center Ludwig Stenlund broke the 1-1 tie with his fourth goal of the season. Defenseman Colin Felix tossed the puck through heavy traffic in front of the net. As players scrambled in front, Stenlund picked up the loose puck, side-stepped the pile of players, and tossed the puck into the open net to give Madison a 2-1 advantage.
The RoughRiders struck first with defenseman Chase Blackmun’s second goal of the season at 3:53 of the opening frame. Left wing Roman Ahcan cycled the puck to right wing Steven Agriogianis along the left wing half-wall. Agriogianis found Blackmun in the high slot for a one-timer that beat Capitols netminder Joey Lamoreaux to give Cedar Rapids a 1-0 lead.
Center Cade Borchardt evened the game at 1-1 with his second tally of the season at 15:09 of the first period. Center Anthony Callin fed the puck back to defenseman Michael Schumacher at the center point. Schumacher blasted a shot on net that RoughRiders goaltender Blake Pietila made the pad save on. Borchardt picked up the rebound on the right side of the net and carried around the back of the cage for a wrap around goal to tie the game.
Left wing Alec Broetzman put away an empty net goal at 19:57 of the third period to finish off the 3-1 victory for the Capitols.
Lamoreaux (1-1-0) earned his first win of the season by stopping 35-of-36 shots. Pietila (3-1-0) took his first loss of the season stopping 18 saves on 20 shots.
Madison was 0-for-2 on the power play. Cedar Rapids went 0-for-4 with the man advantage
