Middleton, WI – Vincent Weis becomes the newest Madison Capitols player to commit to a division I college following his commitment to University of St. Thomas this past week. Weis will be the first Capitol to join the Tommies following their promotion to division I hockey on July 15th.
“I’ve always wanted to go to school in a bigger city after growing up around UW-Madison, so the fact that St. Thomas is in the Twin Cities was a great start,” says Weis. “Coach [Jeff] Boeser has been great to talk to, and is a big reason I have faith this is the right place to be. Being so close to home is just icing on the cake.”
The native of Verona, Wisconsin hasn’t had the most direct path to playing collegiate hockey, but it’s one that has primed him for whatever comes his way. The defenseman played his youth hockey for the Capitols AAA program before getting a taste of the USHL for 10 games in 2016-17.
From there, it was a carousel of teams, including stops with the Minnesota Magicians, New Jersey Rockets, Janesville Jets, and Kenai River Brown Bears before planting himself back in Madison this past season.
“It’s a huge sense of relief to know where I’m going to be for the next four years and not have to worry about finding a team all summer like I have for the last 3 years. There were definitely some tough and stressful days throughout the past 3 years, but it has definitely paid off now. I couldn’t be more excited”.
While with the Capitols, Weis played in 43 games in the shortened 2019-2020 campaign, picking up 7 assists in the process. As a smaller defenseman, Weis showed off his skating ability and puck handling skills on a nightly basis. It was finally a place he could settle in and feel comfortable.
“I can’t explain how thankful I am that coach Garrett [Suter] gave me an opportunity this year. There were many coaches that doubted me, but he was not one of them.”
St. Thomas joins Long Island University as the newest division I hockey programs for the 2020-2021 college hockey season.
