SeeSaw Game Ends with Muskegon in a Shootout

Middleton, WI – A high scoring affair was settled in a shootout as the Muskegon Lumberjacks on the series finale by a final of 5-4 over the Madison Capitols on Saturday night at Bob Suter’s Capitol Ice Arena.

Madison opened the scoring for the second straight night as Ryan Kirwan fired home his 18th of the year on an early power play for Madison. Branden Suter fed Kirwan for the 1-0 lead only 1:56 into the opening period.

Muskegon made their way back into the game, and more, netting two from Rhett Pitlick and Jack Williams on odd-man rushes that beat a sprawling Christian Stoever to finish out the first period.

Madison exacted their revenge in the second, as Carson Bantle beat his man down the wall, cut in front of the net, and lifted one over the shoulder of Eric Green. Two and a half minutes later, Kirwan found the back of the net again for his second power play goal of the night, and 19th of the season, regaining the one-goal lead.

A Muskegon power play would tie the game from Christophe Fillion, but it was Bantle again who put home the go-ahead goal with 2:06 remaining in the 2nd period. Pokorny won a clean draw to Hunter Carrick who unleashed a slapshot that Bantle tipped past Green in front of the net.

Dylan Wendt crashed the net and received a beautiful feed from Tyler Dunbar to even the score at 4 less than five minutes into the 3rd period.

After a scoreless overtime period, we headed to a shootout where the Capitols were stifled in three attempts. All Muskegon needed was one, and they got it from Tanner Kelly with the game-winner.

Stoever turned away 32 shots in the contest, and went 2-for-3 in the shootout in the loss.

Capitols return to action next Saturday at Bob Suter’s Capitol Ice Arena for DC’s Birthday Bash and Mascot Mania. Mascots from all around the Madison area will be showing up and celebrating with D.C. Eagle.
