First Shutout Since January 2017

Muskegon, MIChristian Stoever posted the first shutout for the Madison Capitols since January 21, 2017 when Dryden McKay shutout the Cedar Rapids RoughRiders. Stoever and the Capitols beat the Muskegon Lumberjacks at LC Walker Arena by a final score of 3-0 on Friday night.

The Capitols put a barrage of shots on Muskegon netminder, Jonathan Williams, early in the game. Patrick Schmiedlin found Brock Baker in front of the net where he was able to fight through a handcuff to slide one by Williams for the opening goal and 1-0 lead with his 4th of the season.

Muskegon outshot the Capitols in the second, but it only takes one to make something happen. That’s exactly what Stepan Pokorny and Madison did late in the period. With less than five minutes left in the middle frame, Carson Bantle poked the puck away from the defender, and started a two-on-one rush with Pokorny. Unselfishly, Bantle fed Pokorny for his 9th goal of the season, and first since November 27th.

Christian Stoever faced a flurry of shots, racking up 49 saves in the shutout, including 26 in the 3rd period alone before Bantle hammered home an empty net goal assisted by Ryan Kirwan to seal the deal.

The Capitols return home to Bob Suter’s Capitol Ice Arena tomorrow, February 8th to take on these same Lumberjacks for the final time this season at 7:05pm.

If you can’t make it out to the game, make sure to tune into Mixlr and HockeyTV to get the live call from broadcaster, Cody Lefkowitz.
