Geneva, IL – The Chicago Steel used a four-goal second period to lift themselves over the Madison Capitols on Friday night at Fox Valley Ice Arena. The Capitols were shut out for the 3rd time this season.
Team traded off chances in the opening period, but Chicago’s sole power play was killed by the Capitols as Christian Stoever put up 15 saves in the first period.
Early in the second, Branden Suter sold out to try and stop a rush, but Sean Farrell jumped over him before finding Brendan Brisson on the back door for his 18th goal of the season.
Another odd-man rush had Mathieu De St. Phalle drop a beautiful pass back to Jimmy Dowd alone in the slot to bury his 2nd of the year for the 2-0 lead.
Chicago put home two straight power play goals to expand the lead to four before the second period was complete, topped off by Gunnarwolfe Fontaine and De St. Phalle.
Zach Hearn came out in net for Madison for his USHL debut at the start of the third period, where he finished the night with 11 saves on 11 attempts
Christian Stoever recorded 28 saves in the loss. The power play finished the night without a chance, while the penalty kill stopped three of five attempts on the evening.
Madison returns to action tomorrow night when the team heads to Dubuque to take on the Fighting Saints. Puck drop is set for 7:05pm.
