Middleton, WI – Patrick Guzzo’s go-ahead goal with 5 seconds remaining in regulation was the difference maker in the Madison Capitols (2-10-0-0) 2-1 loss to the Waterloo Black Hawks (8-2-1-0) on Sunday at Bob Suter’s Capitol Ice Arena.
The crowd showed up in packs for the opportunity to meet Ryan Suter and Ryan Hartman who were in attendance and signing autographs during the game.
A highly penalized first period saw the Capitols on the penalty kill four different times, but the kill was perfect for Madison on the night, killing off all five Waterloo chances.
The Black Hawks were able to get on the board first on their 28th shot of the night when Mason Reniers found Kyle Haskins in front of the net for the tip-in and his 2nd goal of the season.
Carson Bantle retaliated with only 34 seconds remaining in the first period by spinning and firing home his 7th of the season to tie the game at 1.
A hard fought third period made it look like the game was heading into overtime, but a turnover at center ice allowed Patrick Guzzo to wind up and deliver a slapshot past the glove of Simon Latkoczy for the 2-1 win with only 5 seconds remaining in regulation.
Latkoczy finished the night 35 of 37 in net, turning back tough play after tough play. Madison completed the kill on all 5 penalties tonight, but the power play went 0-for-4 in the process.
Madison returns to action on Friday, November 8th when they take on the Chicago Steel at Bob Suter’s Capitol Ice Arena for their 6th annual Military Appreciation Night presented by AFGE.
