Dubuque, IA – Two power play goals in the third period was enough separation for the Dubuque Fighting Saints (3-0-0-0) in a 3-2 victory over the Madison Capitols (1-3-0-0) on Saturday night in Dubuque, Iowa. The game took place as Dubuque’s home opener at Mystique Ice Center.
It took nearly the whole first period, but Madison was able to break through late in the first period thanks to some tic-tac-toe passing from the Capitols top line. With 1:07 remaining in the first period, Kristoff Papp fed Reid Pabich across the blue line where he made a move around a defender towards the net. As goaltender Erik Portillo hit the deck to make the save, Pabich threaded the needle to Carson Bantle on the back door for the open net goal.
The Fighting Saints got one back early into the second period with a crisp passing play of their own. Dubuque would go on to score two power play goals in the 3rd period to put the game out of reach and bring home the victory.
Madison made one final push with a 6-on-4 power play goal seven seconds into the man advantage. Ryan Kirwan fired home his second goal of the season to cut the deficit in half, but it was too little too late.
Madison’s netminder, Simon Latkoczy (1-2-0-0), made 33 saves on 36 shots on the night en route to the loss.
